A delightful set of antique wooden block jigsaw puzzles illustrated by George Peace Micklewright (1893–1951), produced by the celebrated 'Victory' Jigsaw Puzzles range, circa 1950s.

The Victory jigsaws were manufactured by the Bournemouth company G.J. Hayter, who produced many series of wooden piece puzzles from circa 1920 until 1970, when they were acquired by rival games manufacturer Spears. Hayter's made great play of these being 'proper' wooden piece jigsaws — and this children's range is a wonderful example of why they were so beloved.

West Bromwich-born G.P. Micklewright, a Quaker and conscientious objector in WW1, is best remembered as the illustrator of many popular novels of the 1920s and 1930s, and latterly for his jacket illustrations for Black Beauty. His warm, characterful animal scenes are perfectly suited to the childhood jigsaw format.

This set features 8 different animal scenes across 16 pieces, each puzzle measuring 8" x 8". Some wear from happy use — please see photos for full condition detail. A wonderful piece of childhood nostalgia and a rare find for collectors of vintage games, wooden toys, or Micklewright illustration.
