Striking vintage hand-carved Makonde Tree of Life sculpture. Masterfully created by the Makonde people of southeast Tanzania, this mid-century ethnographic piece is carved from a single, solid log of premium, heavy African Ironwood.
The piece features a complex, astonishing network of intricately interlocked human figures climbing upward together. Known traditionally as an Ujamaa or Dimoongo carving, this iconic style represents family unity, ancestral connection, and the structural interdependence of a community across generations. Each expressive figure physically supports the next, symbolizing how humanity thrives through collective effort and mutual care.
Material Authenticity & Proof:
Unlike modern replicas made from light softwoods disguised with shoe polish or artificial black paint, this is a genuine, dense indigenous hardwood sculpture. The raw, unpolished base serves as a beautiful stamp of authenticity, clearly showcasing the tree's natural growth rings, the rich transition from the dark core heartwood to the reddish-brown outer grain, and a minor natural aging check split at the core center.
Rich lustre, heavy weight, and incredible sculptural depth, a fine piece of African tribal folk art.
