Rare Antique Salt Glazed Pottery Childs Mug Staffordshire c1830s
A rare and charming antique salt glazed pottery child's mug, dating from circa the 1830s and almost certainly of Staffordshire origin — one of the great centres of English ceramic production throughout the 19th century.
The mug is decorated in a deep cream and brown colour palette, featuring a beautifully tactile raised (embossed) grapevine design to the body, a dark brown rim, and a delicate embossed running dot edge around the top rim — all characteristic decorative techniques of early Victorian Staffordshire salt glazed stoneware. The combination of the relief moulding and the warm two-tone palette gives the piece a wonderful rustic authenticity.
Salt glazing — achieved by throwing common salt into the kiln at high temperatures — produces the distinctive slightly textured, orange-peel surface that is the hallmark of this type of early English stoneware. A genuinely rare survival in good antique condition for its age.
